Text Box: the UUA Women and Religion course,
“Unraveling the Gender Knot.”

Written by Barbara Schonborn, Alison Campbell
and Rosemary Matson and based on the book
The Gender Knot: Unraveling Our Patriarchal
Legacy by Allan G. Johnson. The class will be
facilitated by Susan Bennett, UUCF Women’s
Spirit Circle founder and the Rev. Bill Welch, UUCF
Minister for Programs. The class will be held 8 Sundays from 3 to 5pm starting October 2.

This course is for all Unitarian Universalist Adults and Youth.  We will examine religious writings that influence our beliefs about women and men, study how the patriarchal system shapes women and men and identify and practice confronting patriarchal actions by organizations, other people and ourselves.

Participants will learn that we participate in our inherited patriarchal system and yet we are not responsible for it. Paths of least resistance are easy to take and hard to recognize.  We can change our attitudes and behavior and can influence others. We will discuss sexism in our own lives and how we respond to it, in a confidential setting. Contact Marian Forte at 703 281-4230 to register.

Text Box: of biological determinacy are pre-existing conditions we face but, not our inevitable destiny.  Gender equity isn’t just a good idea.  It is a necessity.

Both men and women of conscience are invited to explore with us the roots of patriarchy, what keeps it alive, and how it affects our
notions about gender.

“Unraveling the Gender Knot – Challenging the System that Binds Us”
We live each day with the legacy of the patriarchal system, but are we stuck with it?  Is it the inevitable or natural order of things?  Is there any escape from its win/lose, power-over/dominance ways?  Are war, oppression and an economic system of exploitation and environmental plunder the inevitable results of patriarchy?  Is there a way out of this bind?
Men and women coming together in harmony in a pattern of co-reliance rather than co-dependence, adding together their strengths, rather than living at odds must be our modern ideal.  Social stereotypes and notions
