STOP Torture Weekend

The UU Service Committee's STOP Torture Weekend is also Sept. 24-26. The events begin Saturday with workshops and lobby trainings at a church in downtown Washington. On Sunday, All Soul's Church Unitarian will host an Interfaith Service that includes torture survivors. The main event of the weekend is a mock trial scheduled for Sunday afternoon, during which prominent actors portraying US government officials (including Martin Sheen as Donald Rumsfeld!) will be prosecuted by real lawyers using real evidence from torture survivors and reputable news sources. Monday will be a rally on Capitol Hill and lobbying for an end to US support for torture. For more information, see http://www.uusc.org.

Text Box: Iraq: Ongoing Witness Against the War

The United for Peace and Justice Coalition is calling Sept 24-26 "three days of massive action" to End the War in Iraq, including a mass rally on the National Mall starting at 11:00 AM on Saturday. Though not formally endorsing the rally, the UUA is promoting it, and the Washington Office will be identifying a UU meeting place. For information on the mobilization, see http://www.unitedforpeace.org. The UU meeting place will be announced fairly close to the rally on our website and this email list.

In the meantime, we hope you're finding ways to connect to events in your community, such as attending vigils, or writing letters to the editor in support of Cindy Sheehan and other parents of service members killed in Iraq. The UUA homepage is currently featuring two stories of UU ministers involved in service and witness; one a navy chaplain recently assigned to Guantanamo Bay, and one who spend several days at Camp Casey outside the Bush family ranch (see http://www.uua.org/). You can write President Bush and your
