2. Women’s History

The Unitarian Universalist Women’s Heritage Society

The mission of the Unitarian Universalist Women’s Heritage Society (UUWHS) is to reclaim, communicate, and celebrate the lives and accomplishments of Unitarian Universalist women and to engage local congregations in the recovery of women’s history so that we may draw courage and inspiration from our heritage, and so that our foremothers may take their rightful place in the ongoing story of Unitarian Universalism.

The UUWHS is a non-profit organization affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association. They are supported by memberships, donations, gifts, and by a matching grant from the Fund for Unitarian Universalism.

Currently, membership in the UUWHS is approximately 400 women and men. Membership rates are as follows: $35 per member; $75 per sustaining member; $150 per sponsor; $750 per life member. Members receive a 10% discount on UUWHS papers and products, and also receive invitations to special events throughout the year, as well as the organization’s semi-annual newsletter. Members are invited to an annual meeting held each year during the UUA’s General Assembly and have full voting privileges.

In addition to planning programs about UU women’s history and assisting congregations in preserving and communicating their histories and the writings of their own women, the Society creates resources such as complete worship services for use by congregations, and a series of Occasional Papers about historic UU women. The organization sells an assortment of books, resources, and sundries through a catalog and sustains a research library of over 1000 volumes by and about UU women in addition to files on many women that include original writings. They also serve as a resource network for scholars and students doing research on various women.
