a six-session religious education curriculum in feminist thealogy for adults and older youth

by
Shirley Ann Ranck

Volume One of the long-awaited update of the popular feminist theology curriculum, Cakes for the Queen of Heaven, is ready to order. IN ANCIENT TIMES introduces participants to ancient Goddesses, weaving their stories together with major concerns of women today.

The five-session adult religious education curriculum includes an introductory section featuring author Shirley's Ranck's "Statement of Feminist Thealogy," Elinor Artman's "Brief Herstory of Cakes," and Nancy Vedder-Shults, "Baking Cakes for the Queen of Heaven." The themes of the Session Plans are: The Sacred Female, In the Name of the Mother and the Daughter, Womanpower, The First Turning-From Goddess to God, and Reclaiming Women's Heritage of Peace." The resource section includes supplementary essays by a number of important authors, a listing of highly recommended materials, and the sheet music of songs by Carole Eagleheart and Ann Forfreedom for use with the curriculum. The curriculum also includes a CD-ROM with five Visual Programs to accompany the sessions, plus resource material for easy distribution to participants.

ON THE THRESHOLD, the six-session continuation of the course, will be shipping Summer 2008. In Part 2 of this new Cakes for the Queen of Heaven program we will continue our journey into the past to reclaim the stories of powerful women to be found in ancient Judaism and in early Christianity. We will also look at the global silencing and brutalization of women that accompanied the rise of patriarchal religion and society. Finally we will celebrate the exciting new world-view and thealogy that has emerged in our time, and explore the personal and social changes that may be suggested by that new world-view and thealogy. We will continue the complex process of telling a new story.

In addition, you may order Carole Etzler Eagleheart's CD "She Calls to Us," which contains many of the songs in the curriculum. Sound samples are available at the UUWR online Store, www.uuwr.org/store.htm. To read more about Cakes and talk with other facilitators, go to www.cakesforthequeenofheaven.org/blog.

Unraveling the Gender Knot: Challenging the System that Binds Us

A course for Unitarian Universalist adults and youths and our friends, published by UUWR in 2004. Topics in the seven two-hour sessions include gender, religion, feminism, economics, invisibility and denial, and how to challenge the patriarchal system.
Participants and co-leaders: * Examine religious writings that influence our beliefs about women and men * Study how the patriarchal system shapes women and men * Identify and practice confronting patriarchal actions by organizations, other people, and ourselves Participants learn that: * We are not responsible for our inherited patriarchal system, and we participate in it. * Paths of least resistance are easy to take and hard to recognize. * We can change our attitudes and behavior, and can influence others.

Course materials include a 100-page detailed course guide for co-leaders with handouts for participants, and two documentary films: Who's Counting? Marilyn Waring on Sex, Lies and Global Economics (National Film Board of Canada, 1995) and The Gods of Our Fathers (Green Lion Productions, 1994). More detail HERE.

BOOKS
CAKES FOR THE QUEEN OF HEAVEN -- Rev. Shirley Ranck . . . $16.95
Cakes for the Queen of Heaven book by Rev. Shirley RanckCakes for the Queen of Heaven, by Shirley Ranck, provides in book format the powerful lessons of the life-transforming curriculum by the same author. The book version, first published 10 years ago, makes this material accessible for women today. It can be used by individuals or small groups to explore key issues women still struggle with today.

Cakes for the Queen of Heaven explores the relationship between women's religious history and the personal issues that arise in women living in this patriarchal society. Women struggle with issues of body image, troubled mother-daughter relationships, sexual freedom and access to power. We need to know that there was a time when the female body was sacred; that there once was a long-lasting religion in which the chief divine actors were a mother and her daughter; that in very ancient times women had significant power in their societies; that although patriarchal societies have oppressed women for centuries, there have always been strong and talented women. Our female history has been erased and trivialized for too long. In this book we meet ancient goddesses and their stories from around the world, real women in ancient Sumer, in Greece, in Judaism and in Christianity. In Cakes for the Queen of Heaven the past is before us, the women are there, and they help us change our lives.

Review from Helen Popenoe, past convener of UU Women & Religion:
To read this taste of the Goddess days, especially in discussion with others, can elicit an inner spiritual journey toward value and meaning as a pro-active adult. That exposure to Goddess power can lead to an increased sense of personal power, sense of dignity and self-worth, improved self-image, self-confidence and feeling valued. This book provides a grounding in seeing oneself as sacred.

GLORIOUS WOMEN: Award-Winning Sermons about Women-- edited by Rev. Dorothy Emerson . . . $17.95
Glorious Women, ed. Rev. Dorothy EmersonGlorious Women is a compilation of sermons that have won the MSUU Sermon Award. The book is edited by Dorothy Emerson and includes her account of the amazing growth of women in UU ministry from the early 1980s through 2004. The sermons are filled with insight to inspire the translation of faith into action and the living of more authentic lives.

Glorious Women is a unique chronicle of women's changing lives and concerns, told through sixteen award-winning sermons. It is also the story of women in ministry and their rise from a tiny minority to over half of the Unitarian Universalist ministers in only twenty-five years. The sermons in this collection speak to the central issues of our times, issues that concern both women and men. Often drawing on historical women's lives and words for inspiration, thirteen women and three men explore the challenges of living lives of integrity and faith in today's world. By sharing their insight and wisdom, these authors encourage all who share their words to live more authentic lives and do what they can to work for a more just world.

Review from Marni Harmony, Minister, First Unitarian Church of Orlando, Florida, and Founding Member of MSUU:
The three decades since the founding of MSUU (Ministerial Sisterhood Unitarian Universalist) have seen not only a remarkable increase in the percentage of women in professional ministry but an equally remarkable transformation of the nature of ministry itself. Reading these sermons affords an opportunity to see what's been on women's (and men's) minds and how these concerns have contributed to the changes!

Outrageous Questions, Legacy of Bronson Alcott and America's One-Room Schools
$16.95 hard cover
$10.95 paperback
SOLD OUT

The father of the author of Little Women, Bronson Alcott, believed children could learn by answering questions.

This book speaks to the nostalgia of the "good old days," contrasting traditional methods with Alcott's groundbreaking ideas. Because Margaret Fuller, as teacher in his school, recorded his questions, his Conversation on Conscience is included, and readers can compare their answers with what students said in 1836. Appeals to both adults and children.

102 pages, in quality paper/hardcover. Creative suggestions for adults working with children, original drawings by John Hartnett, photos of one-room school houses, biographical information.

How I Got to Harvard, Off and On Stage with Margaret Fuller
$15.95

This is the behind-the-scenes story of how author/actress Laurie James "discovered" Margaret Fuller and finally presented a solo drama at Harvard with introductions by Buckminster Fuller, great-grand-nephew of Margaret Fuller, and with Radcliffe sponsoring a reception.

James' drama "grew" as she survived limitations of grassroots facilities in libraries, churches, conference sites, colleges throughout the United States, Mexico, Hong Kong, Edinburgh, eventually touring theaters in Los Angeles and New York.

Audiences hungrily asked questions, driving James to the library for answers. More information on Fuller was needed and James learned how to research and write books.

In total, James challenges you to "get to Harvard" too, in your own unique way.

339 pages, in paperback, photographs including some never-before-seen of Buckminster Fuller, performance schedule, bibliography, index.

The Wit and Wisdom of Margaret Fuller Ossoli
$8.50
Zero in on the substance of Fuller's brilliant mind and expression - words as relevant today as over a century ago. Quotable passages. An intriguing sampler of Fuller's diaries, journals, letters, articles and books, arranged by subject for easy reference.

96 pages, in quality paperback, references, footnotes, bibliography.

Why Margaret Fuller Ossoli is Forgotten
$8.50

Fuller's book on equality - the first in America - sent shock waves throughout the USA and Europe. Author Laurie James traces how Fuller's achievement has been slighted as her first co-biographers, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Clarke and Channing mutilated her letters and papers and portrayed her to conform to the standard of womanhood of the day. The facts show how scholars today have followed this same pattern.

72 pages, in quality paperback, footnotes, bibliography.

By Laurie James
$25.00
Presents excerpts from the speeches of the first women who dared to defy 19th century American code that it was a "sin" for women to speak in public or church. Speeches reveal women pressuring to effect change in laws on slavery, poverty, inequality, and women’s right to vote. Groundbreakers are Frances Wright, Angelina Grimke, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, and Susan B. Anthony; each is described by a woman eyewitness who attended the event. Excerpts of Gloria Steinem’s writings highlight why even today women find it difficult to speak in public. Included is the famous 1872 trial of Susan B. Anthony who had the audacity to vote illegally. The audience may hiss or applaud the speakers in the spirit of the 19th century. 1 hour. 14 adult roles, including 2 male roles (may be played by women).
