1. Governance of UU Women’s Groups

Circle Group with Rotating Leadership
White Bear Unitarian Universalist Church
White Bear, Minnesota

Church membership: 300

Type of women’s group: There is a women’s spirituality group, a daytimers’ lunch bunch, an art group, and a women’s book club. The women’s spirituality group has met monthly and attendance varies from 6–16. Leadership for the meetings changes monthly and attendance has fallen due to a lack of consistent leadership. They successfully used Cakes for the Queen of Heaven. They once used Rise Up and Call Her Name, but that group languished. They have also tried a variety of other programs including a Solstice Service and Aphrodite Day (see Wild Ideas page). Some years, the group has sponsored a retreat for women; the retreat was a bonding experience for those who participated and also raised funds for the organization. There is no Board of Directors or umbrella organization.

Leaders: Presently uses rotating leadership; past leaders have included Karen Dahl, Kate Christopher, and Mary McLeod.

UU Women’s Federation affiliated? No

Dues? No

Food? Yes

Highs? The group has had several successful retreats

Lows? They are struggling with leadership issues. Women want to participate but don’t have the time or energy for leadership responsibilities and this seems to be affecting attendance.
